Understanding and Preventing Political Violence

September 10-11, 9:00 AM to Noon @ The Historic Grove Theater

From our friends at Over-Zero, “Elections can intensify risks for political and identity-based violence. By counteracting dangerous narratives, affirming democratic and nonviolent values, and coordinating responses with other leaders, we can create a society where everyone feels safe and welcome to fully participate in public life.”

As we enter into the midterm election season, we trust that our community is already a resilient one. And yet, we all know that only one or two bad actors can diminish our feeleings of togetherness and safety. That’s why we are offering this free, nonpartisan, training (lunch to follow each day) for our community.

Thursday, September 10 is reserved for elected officials, first responders, poll workers, and others who keep both our elections and our community safe. We begin at 9:00am and conclude with a free lunch.

Friday, September 11 is a training day for any who would like to know more about identifying and preventING election-based violence. We will meet immediately following the September 11 rememberance at Oak Ridge High School.

RSVP’s are stongly encouraged because space is limited.

We will end each day with lunch and conversation, and adjourn in time to allow folks to return to afternoon work.

More about our speakers:

Over Zero is dedicated to supporting communities for preventing and rising above political and identity-based violence. We focus on the role of communications, including guidance for how to talk about political violence without feeding into its aims. Drawing from global case studies, this training will introduce strategies for violence prevention and response for leaders from diverse sectors.

Note: Over Zero is a 501(c)3 organization. This workshop is not intended to support or oppose any candidate for political office or any electoral outcome(s). What we will focus on is how to shape norms and narratives to create a less permissive environment for political violence.
